Definitions
Balance
Symmetrical: Having corresponding points whose connecting lines are bisected by a given point or perpendicularly bisected by a given line or plane.
Asymmetrical: Occurs when elements are placed unevenly in a piece, but work together to produce harmony overall.
Radial: The balance as the result of components that are distributed around a center point or spring out from a central line.
Scale and Proportion
Scale: Refers to the proportion or ratio that defines the size relationships.
Proportion: A principle of art that describes the size, location or amount of one element to another, or to the whole, in a work.
Emphasis: Make certain make certain parts of their artwork stand out and grab your attention. The center of interest or focal point is the place the artist draws your eye to first.
Contrast: The arrangement of opposite elements in a piece to create visual interest, excitement and drama.
Variety: Occurs when an artist creates something that looks different from the rest of the artwork. An artist may use variety to make you look at a certain part or make the artwork more interesting.
Repetition: It is indicating movement by the repetition of elements.
Rhythm: Movement or variation characterized by the regular recurrence or alternation of different quantities or conditions.
